What is macrame?

Macrame is a textile art that involves knotting and weaving rop (or cord) to create both decorative and functional pieces.

Using a few simple knots you can create two- or three-dimensional shapes, with sizes ranging from large wall hangings and dresses to dainty earrings and bracelets.

The history of macrame goes back hundreds or even thousands of years, but it remains a very popular hobby today. It’s easy and relatively inexpensive to start, with virtually no limit to what you can create!

The great thing about macrame is that you don’t need much to get started!

We have a guide to essential macrame supplies, but here’s the short version:

Macrame cord is the only thing that all projects require. There are different types like three-ply rope, single-ply string, braided cord, and waxed cord, as well as different materials like cotton and jute.

Check out our in-depth guide to macrame cord to find out which one is best for you!

Support pieces

Depending on your project, you’ll probably need something to attach your cord to.

Dowels are essential for wall hangings, and they are easy to find in any craft store. You can also use driftwood or sticks you find in nature for a more boho look!

Rings and hoops are useful for everything from plant hangers to jewelry. Larger loops can also be used for dreamcatchers.

Other supplies

Most of the rest of the supplies you’ll need for macrame can be found around the house: scissors, a tape measure, and even a comb!

Others, like dye or beads, can be found pretty easily in most stores. If you’re considering jewelry, you may want to invest in a macrame board, but it’s not strictly necessary.

Nowadays it’s easy to find guides online for basic macrame knots (scroll down a bit!) and projects, but if you want something more comprehensive, we recommend trying an online macrame class.

That way you’ll not only learn the knots and projects, but also tips and tricks from experts!

Once you have a bit more experience, you may also want some macrame books for more complicated knots or project patterns.
