A glimpse into the creative mind of self-taught illustrator Chus Rojo

Today, we’re talking to the (very) talented, self-taught illustrator Chus Rojo!ย

Born and raised in Pontevedra, Spain, after dipping her toes into the world of advertising and public relations, Chus decided to take the plunge and pursue her true calling: illustration.ย

Ever since, the Galician artist has been unstoppable, creating wonderous, naive universes for advertising and children’s publishers, all while still carving out time to explore her more personal sketchbook art at her beloved (and crowded) craft desk.

Keep reading for the full interview, and check out all of Chus’s inspiring work on her website Instagram account, and Advocate Art profile

Tell us about yourself. What do you consider your best work so far?

Hi! I’m Chus Rojo, and I’m an illustrator.

I mostly do editorial and advertising illustrations for work, and my style is along the lines of children’s book illustration; therefore, all about bright colors.

However, my more personal work is more eclectic and versatile. I like to experiment with different materials, more minimalistic color ranges, and black-and-white compositions.

I wouldn’t know how to pick my best or favorite work! But I think that my favorite pieces are always those I’ve worked on last; I tend to become very fond of each the more I work on them.

Tell us about your workshop

Currently, I share a studio with my husband in the center of Pontevedra. But for many years, my workspace, where I spent hours painting and drawing, was my craft desk at home.

It’s packed with everything I love: markers, brushes, colored pencils, paints โ€ฆ and many pictures!

It’s a somewhat dark room, but it has been my creative corner and refuge. It’s seen me draw non-stop, get frustrated, be happy, work late hours into the night…

Now, it’s where I experiment with painting without thinking of it as work.

What is your favorite material or tool to work with, and why?

My professional work is digital. I use Procreate on an iPad, along with editing and layout programs on the computer.

My favorite drawing materials vary. I don’t have a very orthodox technique or creative process. I switch from one thing to another depending on what I’m working on or paint with whatever I have at hand.

I started using watercolors a lot and then colored pencils (and eventually began combining both). Now I’m also trying gouache and Neocolor I crayons.

I only really use graphite pencils when I’m looking to draw more “mindlessly”, although I have to say I really enjoy seeing how a drawing can fully come into being by just using a pencil.

Regarding my visual diary/sketchbook art, there are two materials I’m particularly fond of at the moment: uniPin calibrated markers and Tombow markers.

I like both for their pigmentation and convenience, and I think they provide very good results without having to plan anything out in advance. Plus, they’re a lot easier to carry around!

How long have you been doing your craft? Who taught you, or where did you learn?

Like almost everyone, I started drawing when I was a child. I come from a very creative family, so my “visual education” started very early.

However, there was a long period of time in which I barely drew, and the less I did it, the more scared I was of facing a blank page.

After completing my degree in advertising and PR, little by little I began to take up painting again, largely thanks to my husband Vicente, who encouraged me to continue painting and take my craft seriously.

As far as illustration goes, apart from a few short courses I took, I’m essentially self-taught. I learned along the way by practicing a lot and observing the works of other artists.

If I’m not mistaken, my work was first commissioned roughly ten years ago. However, these past three years have been the most productive yet: there isn’t a day that goes by when I’m not drawing, whether for work or for leisure.

Did you have creative hobbies growing up? Did you always want to pursue art, or is this a passion that grew over time?

I’ve always been attracted to everything creative since I was a child.

I used to watch cartoons like Sleeping Beauty over and over again and draw the characters and colors. When reading, I’d always choose the books with the prettiest covers. I also did a lot of crafting.

I always wanted to do something artistic, but I didn’t know exactly what or how I could make a living as an artist.

So, when the time came to choose my degree, I decided to go into a field that was both creative and provided opportunities in the workforce. But at the end of the day, this experience was a lot more theoretical than I had anticipated.

However, I learned a lot of things that have helped me in my current profession, which have provided a different perspective on how to approach and sell my work.

What is the most challenging aspect of your craft or business?

Multiple sketchbooks by Chus Rojo

I think the most challenging aspect is the fact that you’re a single person who has to take on a lot of different roles and tasks.

You have to be an accountant, publicist, project manager, draftsman, a community manager โ€ฆ You have to constantly move forward, sell your work, create new projects, research, send emails, set budgets…

I think knowing all of this beforehand is helpful in avoiding frustration in this profession. The truth is that most people think artists spend their time drawing all day, but in reality, a large chunk of time is spent on managing a ton of different tasks.

On a more personal note, I’m an introvert and, therefore, find it challenging to show my work, although this is something I have to face daily.

I admit it gradually becomes easier, but whenever I have to share something new, my nerves, insecurities, and shyness get in the way, and I have a hard time getting out of my head.

This is one of the reasons why my Instagram account isn’t always as updated as I’d like. But these are barriers I’m working on overcoming little by little!

What do you most love about your craft or business?

I really enjoy researching topics and looking for new references that I know nothing about.

I do, however, have to set a time limit for these tasks; otherwise, I spend a lot of time getting lost in this part of the process.

And, of course, I then truly enjoy the process of applying those references, sketching, creating new characters, and shaping something new.

Any advice for beginners to your craft?

I think I’d give anyone getting started the same advice I give myself every day.

Firstly, when you’re drawing, don’t avoid making mistakes. Making mistakes is a crucial part of learning.

Observe works by other creatives, but don’t compare yourself. Remember that each work comes from a specific context and has a unique path and way of communicating visually.

Also, don’t trust tools or so-called shortcuts that promise quick results or that encourage you to skip over parts of the creative process. Be patient, learn, and practice a lot. The process is a marathon, not a sprint.

Don’t believe everything you see on social media!

And last but not least, don’t forget to enjoy the process!

Who/what inspires you? Any shoutouts to fellow makers?

There are many artists who inspire me every day, with similar or very different styles to mine.

Regarding illustration specifically, I love Rebecca Green. Not only her work but how she shares what she does. Her newsletter is wonderful!

Others include Laura Pรฉrez Granel, who is a big reference in the illustration world here in Spain, and Anoosha Syed, who I admire as an illustrator and a communicator.

I am also fascinated by Mab Graves for her work as a multidisciplinary artist and her ability to create a community. Following her on Instagram is like entering a parallel universe!

Marta Altรฉs and Julia Sardรกโ€ฆ. just to mention a few, because, from Spain alone, I could mention a long list of very talented artists who inspire me.

As for what inspires me, the truth is that I’m a very visual person, so anything that catches my eye, whether photographs, fashion, a beautiful store, food, or an object

I also love movies and classic books; I’m very nostalgic in that way! Haha!

Anything else you’d like to share?

My husband, Vicente, is a professional photographer, and I think it’s inevitable that we both nurture each other in terms of creativity and inspiration.

I believe that it’s reflected in our work, too, or so it seems to me, even though we both have very different crafts.

When I met Vicente 13 years ago, he already had a camera in his hand. And how and what he captures through his lens has been a big source of inspiration for me ever since.

We tend to spot different things, but the way he looks or frames what he observes has taught me to “see” from other perspectives. And, of course, all the support and help we give each other is essential in our process.

Now, let me just say that things go a little differently whenever we have to collaborate on a project together: that isn’t as easy! Haha! We both want to do things our way.

Funnily enough, although we’ve been busier than ever in the last couple of years after having had two children, we’ve been experiencing the most creatively productive phase yet!

Original Spanish interview:

Cuรฉntanos sobre ti. ยฟQuรฉ creas?

ยกHola! Soy Chus Rojo y soy ilustradora. Me dedico principalmente a la ilustraciรณn editorial y publicitaria.
