Introduction to Mosaic Artwork
Teacher: Gary Drostle
Duration: 19 Lessons (3h 50m)
Exploring mosaic art for the first time?
With over 30 years of experience, Gary Drostle will go over almost four hours of content covering the history of mosaics, along with the techniques and materials this art form requires.
During this time, you’ll also put a project together to practice as you learn: a koi pond mosaic design. The paper-face technique, sketching, selecting tesserae (mosaic pieces), cutting, laying, and assembling are only some of the many steps Gary will demonstrate.
While this course may seem dense for beginners, it’s the perfect starting point if looking to master the purest form of mosaic art without previous experience. It’s also a great pick if you want to learn the fundamentals to develop art projects with other mediums.

Beginners Mosaic: Indirect Method
Teacher: Silvie Jacobi + Joe Moss
Duration: 34 Lessons (2h 23m)
This Udemy course features mosaic duo Silvie Jacobi and Jose Moss, who will guide you through the process of mosaic-making through the indirect method.
Contrary to the direct method (placing tesserae directly onto a base, side up), the indirect method is a bit more complex. This approach involves fixing and assembling tesserae backward, meaning you will only see your final design once you flip your surface/base around.
During this class, your instructors will cover the basics of the method, how to source materials, demonstrate cutting, laying, and assembling techniques, all while discussing the nature and requirements of the process.
Although an introductory course, keep in mind that the indirect method may present more challenges for newbies. However, if unconventional art processes make you jump for joy, this approach could be the motivation you need to get started with the craft.
Taking different mosaic classes to experience both methods is also an effective way to test the waters to find which resonates most with you. At the end of the day, how you initiate your mosaics journey comes down to personal preference!

Design and Create Portuguese Ceramic Tiles
Teacher: Marisa Ferreira + Alba Plaza
Duration: 12 Lessons (1h 38m)
Being half Portuguese, I have to admit this is one of my favorite mosaic classes on the list — not just because it reminds me of home but because I absolutely love and admire the originality of this variation of the craft.
This Domestika course presents ceramic duo and tile experts Marisa Ferreira and Alba Plaza, who pay tribute to the timeless art of azulejos: Portuguese tiles.
The particular style of mosaic art does not rely on the placement of solid-colored tiles to create a specific image or design. Instead, it uses square tiles painted with distinct designs in a specifically arranged and often quadrilateral configuration.
You will learn how to compose and create an azulejo from scratch and paint them upon preparation. The final result will be a beautiful, hand-painted four-tile composition!
Though prior instruction on mosaic art might fuel your creativity in this context, it is not necessary for learning or enjoyment. In fact, the specific lessons about making these clay tiles might complement the know-how you receive in other mosaic classes!

This style has become quite the trend in recent years, allowing tech-inspired artists to translate traditional art forms into beautiful digital works.
You’ll learn layering and sketching skills to create high-resolution graphic designs imitating techniques applied in physical mosaic-building. In addition to this, Molly has a litany of brush packs, YouTube lessons, and additional resources to help you along the way.
This course is an intermediate class, meaning additional knowledge on Procreate beforehand is strongly recommended.
Because hosted on Skillshare, a subscription will give you open access to additional classes to learn more about the app or different types of mosaic art.
Fabric Mosaic Wall-Hanging
Teacher: Rawyah Sami
Duration: 8 Lessons (24m)
Finishing up our list of the best mosaic classes is this unique take on fabric mosaic art, featuring Skillshare teacher Rawyah Sami.
At this point, you have probably realized that there are very few limits when it comes to exploring the theme of mosaics through different mediums!
In this course, you’ll learn a method of mosaic design that is decidedly more folksy: fabric mosaic art.
Your teacher will go over how to use tiny pieces of fabric to create incredible designs, select the appropriate materials, grasp the process for actual design execution, and acquire the skills required to come up with a fabric mosaic pattern of your own.
One of the best parts of this class is undoubtedly Rawyah’s enthusiasm! It’s inspiring to see her love and passion for the craft and her emphasis on utilizing recycled resources — the ideal approach if one of your goals is sustainable art!
