If you’re reading this, I’m guessing you’ve had your share of waterproof pens at one point or another. Or shall I say, waterproof-ish pens? Been there.
However, after a bit of trial and error, I eventually discovered a game-changer: Sakura’s Pigma Micron pens.
But are Micron pens waterproof? Or does Micron ink bleed when in contact with water or humidity?
As a mixed-medium enthusiast, here’s why I use these Japanese art pens for doodling, watercoloring, and everything in between.

Are Micron pens waterproof?
Yes, Micron pens are waterproof fineliner pens containing high-quality, water-resistant ink.
Micron pens endure moisture and humidity exceptionally well, making them reliable, well-rounded pens for creating as well as preserving artwork over time.
This is one of the main reasons many artists who sell or exhibit their work loyally stick to Micron pens.
Also, because they’re waterproof, they’re perfect for a myriad of mixed-medium projects — particularly watercoloring.
However, while they’re perfect in my eyes, it’s hard to believe these fineliners are entirely waterproof. For example, are Micron pens waterproof when completely submerged in water?
That’s obviously a whole other story.
Or is it? (she questioned as she dunked a Micron-inked sheet of paper into a basin of water).
Well, there you have it!
Are Micron pens waterproof? You betcha.
What kind of ink is in Micron pens?
Micron pens contain waterproof pigment ink.
Unlike dye, pigment ink consists of solid particles suspended in a liquid carrier, resulting in an extremely stable formula.
This stability ensures that ink does not bleed or smudge and is highly resistant to water, humidity, and moisture. In addition, it dries very quickly and is long-lasting and lightfast.
The archival, waterproof ink in these fineliner pens makes them ideal for hobbyists and professionals, particularly if your end goal is to preserve your work over time.
Why use waterproof ink?
Waterproof ink offers numerous benefits.
The most obvious advantage is that it’s resistant to moisture and humidity, which allows you to work in different settings. This is something to consider if you enjoy working outdoors!
In addition, waterproof ink is more durable and can withstand exposure to elements without fading. This is especially useful if you plan to showcase or sell your artwork.
Waterproof Micron pens work best on paper, but make sure surfaces aren’t rough to the point where they wear down tips or make them fray.
How long does Micron pen ink take to dry?
Sakura Micron pens typically take anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two to dry, depending on the surface.
However, a couple of seconds is all it takes if used on standard sketching paper or watercolor blocks.
Their quick-drying, waterproof properties make them compatible across various mediums. They really are the ideal pen for experimenting with different approaches, whether for work or play.
Can you mix Micron pens with watercolor?
You can definitely use Micron pens with watercolor; in fact, I encourage it!
Since they’re waterproof, Micron pens won’t bleed with watercolor. This makes them perfect for adding bold details or fine lines to colorful washes.
The combination of fineliner ink and watercolor makes way for lots of creative works; here are a few for a little inspiration:
