Hola! My name is Juanjo Garcia, and I’m a jeweler and musician.

As a jeweler, I always aim to create something new, tell stories, break away from traditional jewelry making, and create pieces that represent more than just something you can wear.

I make brooches, rings, and objects incorporating light as well as engravings.

Ultimately, I use jewelry-making as a form of expression and a way to channel my inner thoughts and feelings into works of art.

Tell us about your workspace

I’ve actually been thinking about moving for a while now to have more space for my workshop; somewhere ideally surrounded by nature and lots of sunlight!

I used to have a workshop that was open to the public, but I had to close it, for a variety of factors.

Currently, my workshop is situated in the largest room of my house, and although it does the trick, everything is pretty compressed!

Having a functional workshop is crucial as an artist because it’s a big part of what keeps you engaged and motivated to keep creating.

What do you consider your best or favorite work?

I find that most of the pieces I love the most, I don’t own anymore! And there are many I don’t even have photos for either.

But, if I had to choose some of my favorites, I would say two pieces: “Holy” and “Lugar Inventado.”

What is your favorite material or tool to work with and why?

I really enjoy combining different materials and digging into a potpourri-like combination of ideas to make art.

I like to work with old, unused pieces or ones I randomly come across to give them “a new life,” whether adapting them to existing ideas or using them to enhance other materials.

For example, I often use copper and varnish for a procedure in which I paint metal. Other materials I work with include wood, silver, steel, stones, resin, paper, gold leaf, and methacrylate.

Playing with LED lights and incorporating small motored applications to add an element of movement is also a big part of my work.

How long have you been doing your craft? Who taught you or where did you learn?

About 20 years ago, I attended a jewelry course here in Mรกlaga, thanks to my Mom! I completed two years of traditional jewelry-making with an old-school jeweler who taught me the ins and outs of making rings, bracelets, and chain earrings.

Eventually, being a creative person by nature, I got tired of taking a more traditional approach to jewelry-making and materials which lead me to explore the craft further and learn on my own.

I also wanted to go beyond the idea that jewelry is solely meant to beautify and began experimenting with different mediums and tools. This led to lots of moments of trial and error in my workshop!

Did you have creative hobbies growing up?

As a kid, I used to draw a lot and would find it entertaining to copy and sketch works from artists I liked. At some point, I also got into small-scale wooden boat model building.

Whenever my parents were at work, I would stay home and keep busy by coming up with imaginary stories as I built all kinds of things. I also often invaded my dad’s toolbox to deconstruct items and create new ones.

What do you most love about your craft or business?

I enjoy making small pieces and seeing the outcome. I’m always surprised by how you can build something seemingly out of the blue in just a few days or hours and see it blossom into a beautiful and meaningful piece of art.

Having total freedom to create still fascinates me; being able to make anything freely according to your criteria only!

The outcome or process doesn’t really matter to me. I like to work on a specific idea just as much as I like to improvise and see where my creativity takes me.

Besides artisan methods, do you incorporate digital art or technology into your work?

While I still use traditional references or methods in my work, I like to apply them from my own personal lens.

For example, I typically incorporate small light circuits and motored pieces in my creations to convey a sense of dynamic and movement โ€” this is an element I feel strongly about.

All of the accessories I use in these cases are analog devices.

Any advice for beginners to your craft?

I would say that putting in the effort and passion is crucial: things don’t happen overnight!

The hardest part is sticking to your goals and figuring out how to move forward, no matter the outcome of your efforts.

However, I believe that things will eventually happen if there’s a path meant for you.

What are your thoughts on social media when it comes to promoting your artwork?

I think it’s just as good a tool as any other to promote your work and get through to different audiences.

On the other hand, nothing beats face-to-face and in-person interaction. I mostly use Instagram because it’s an easy way for people interested in my work to find my website.

What inspires you?

Some form of inspiration can be found in everything I make. For example, seeing a tree branch swing could be enough to inspire an idea!

Likewise, I could find inspiration after talking with a friend, traveling to a new city, or through my music; I like the idea of translating music into an object.

What inspires me most are love, beauty, cats, concerts, life, pain, happiness, night, cities, nature, family, life’s ups and downs

Anything else youโ€™d like to share?

Yes! I’ve been preparing for an exhibition for the Arts and Crafts school in Seville.

In July, I will also present work in a collective art show called “Until Death Do Us Part” with the Alliages association for the Smuchk trade fair in Munich, Germany.

And this September, I’ll also be participating in a collective exhibition, COLLECTIVA | Joalharia de Autor in Oporto, Portugal.

Original Spanish interview:

Cuรฉntanos sobre ti. ยฟQuรฉ creas?

ยกMuchas gracias y feliz verano a todas y todos!
